Among the Ionian islands in Greece, Kefalonia is the largest and greenest. There is abundance of beautiful nature and spectacular landscape there. Travelers and vacationers who come here are enthralled by the imposing rugged mountain ranges and the valleys in between them that are filled with series of vineyards. There are also some exotic Kefalonia beaches surrounded by giant cliffs that are filled with all types of vegetation. Every summer in Kefalonia, there is a huge influx of tourists who come here to visit the numerous villages and beaches.
Argostoli, Assos, Lixouri, Poros, Sami and Fiskardo are the most favoured touristy spots. Most of these villages are close to the best beaches on Kefalonia. These villages of Kefalonia have extremely well developed tourism infrastructure to support the huge numbers of tourists staying in these villages. On the northern side of the island, there is the beach of Myrtos, the most photographed spot of Kefalonia. Its breathtaking beauty has been described by many as a "piece of heaven", a golden sand beach surrounded by green, steep cliffs. Many beach bars have opened above the bay of Myrtos and provide gorgeous view to the island.
Another popular resort in Kefalonia is Lassi, the most frequented spot close to Argostoli, the capital town of Kefalonia. The beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos around Lassi are clean and beautiful. In fact, they have been awarded the Blue Flag for their cleanness, as many other beaches on the island. Family friendly and with many tourist facilities, the water is shallow in these two beaches and it is perfect for children to play here.
Another amazing beach in Kefalonia is Antisamos, on the north eastern side of the island. With golden soft sand, clean water and an amazing green landscape, Antisamos became most famous when scenes from the Hollywood film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" were filmed there. Antisamos beach cab also be used as an excursion base for some of the most amazing sights in Kefalonia, including mountainous villages in the inland and the north and of course the lake caves of Melissani and Drogarati, two amazing miracles of nature.
However, do not think that Kefalonia is all about crowded beaches and tourist resorts. It is the opposite, in fact. There are some hot spots that get frequented in summer, but the rest of the island is untouched by tourism. Although this is one of the most popular islands in Greece, its large size can provide numerous small coves to relax and enjoy some privacy. If you drive around the island or make a tour by boat, you will discover plenty of these small, beautiful places to relax and enjoy your hot summer days.
